Bath Half voted one of UK’s most atmospheric races - 18 Jan 2013

The Bath Half Marathon (BATHALF) has been named as the UK’s second most atmospheric race of 2012. The event has been awarded the accolade by Runner’s World, based on a combination of editor’s choice and feedback from runners on their forum, the most popular and well used running forum in Great Britain.

As one of the UK's longest standing and most popular road races, the BATHALF has sold out quickly every year since 2000, and race organisers believe that the atmosphere on race day plays a big part in that.

Race Director, Andrew Taylor from Running High commented: “We are absolutely thrilled to be named as the UK’s second most atmospheric race in the UK for 2012. We work tirelessly to put on a successful event each year and the fact that we sell out well in advance each year demonstrates that we’re getting something right, but the 30,000 spectators that line the streets of Bath and our amazing volunteers are the people who really make the event what it is”.

The two-lap course ensures opportunities for spectators and crowd support around the whole course and there is never a dull moment for runners, with music and entertainment, or spectators cheering them on at every point.

The race is famed for its fast, flat course, which attracts top British and overseas elite athletes and experienced club runners.  Larger city centre road races such as the BATHALF are also particularly popular with recreational and charity runners, and Bath as a popular tourist city attracts entrants from across the UK and abroad.

The BATHALF has taken second place in the category, missing out only to The Great North Run, one of the UK’s biggest and most popular running events, which is broadcast live on TV and sees 56,000 runners take part each year.

The race faced tough competition, as it wasn’t just half marathons they were up against; the award was open to any race held in the UK, from 5 and 10k races, through to marathons and novelty runs.

Andrew added: “To make second place, beating events like the Virgin London Marathon and the Edinburgh Marathon is a real achievement and the spectators and volunteers who come out of their way to support our runners each year should be very proud.

“An impressive 60% of runners who took part in the BATHALF in 2012 were repeat runners, having entered in previous years, and the atmosphere of the race plays a big part in that. Runners want to be part of event’s that are memorable for all the right reasons, and that is something what we strive to be consistent with, improving year on year”.

Third, fourth and fifth place in the atmosphere category went to Reading Half Marathon, Bupa Great Birmingham Run and Petts Wood 10k respectively.

The BATHALF, which never fails to sell out, is the biggest half marathon in the West Country and the largest one-day charity fundraising event in the region, supporting over 80 local and national charities each year. The 2012 event raised in excess of £1.5m for good causes
and is expected to grow even further in the next few years.

Charities - 28 Nov 2012

The Bath Half Marathon is one of the largest charity fundraising events in the south west region, providing a valuable source of income for a wide variety of local, regional, national and international charities.  In 2012 a record figure of £1.5 million pounds was raised for charity, and indications for the 2013 Bath Half are that this figure will be surpassed once again.

Each year we highlight the invaluable work of a number of charities. This year's Lead Race Charity is Coppafeel.

Entries to the Bath Half Marathon have been heavily oversubscribed for the last 12 years. About 15% of the half marathon entries are reserved for our official race charities.  These places are available by application direct to one of our Golden Bond race charities, in return for a commitment from you to fundraise for their charity.  Many charities offer training and fundraising support, running vests and race day hospitality in return for your fundraising commitment.
